Abstract

Breeding biology of Gudusia chapra were observed on specimens captured from the Panchet reservoir at Jharkhand district of West Bengal during 2015-2016.The fish is planktophagus and omnivorous in feeding habit, algae constituting bulk of the food item in the gut. Feeding intensity fluctuated with seasons, pre and post spawning months show higher intensity than the spawning month. November to February was the most active feeding period. It was concluded that G. chapra is a prolific breeder and reduced feeding activity could serve as an indicator of spawning activity of the fish.
