Weld Cladding, ATIG Welding and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing: Some Emerging Areas of Welding Research

In this article, first, an outline on cladding processes, weld cladding and the use of a buttering layer to improve cladding performance is made. Next, the use of activating flux for having high productivity in GTAW or TIG Welding is highlighted. Lastly, a relatively new area of wire arc additive manufacturing and its opportunities are briefed. This article, in fine, makes an attempt to open up some of the immense possibilities of research in welding.

‘Culture’ is the true reflection of the total way of life of a given society. This profusely influences the health conditions of people living in a that society. An endeavor is made herein to analyses the Indian customs and culture vis-à-vis the social distancing, self-isolation and quarantine on the backdrop of the recent past crisis of coronavirus pandemic. It is believed, the post-COVID-19 world is going to be different, and people would pay more positive attention to the age old practices of social distancing and self-isolation. Mind of people must be open maximal conscientiously, though minimizing the physical contacts, at this time of contagion.

Livelihood Security of Women through Self Help Group: A Case Study in Coastal Villages of Purba Medinipur District, West Bengal

Women always get less priority in terms of resource consumption, work participation, and decision-making with respect to the man. Self-Help Group (SHG) is an organization where women lead the group and they are the main beneficiaries. Self-help groups have become a powerful tool to promote women’s livelihood securely. This paperis based on primary data as well as secondary data collected from the Ramnagar-I Block Development Office and the Self-Help Group members of 261 SHG in 23 coastal villages of Purba Medinipur district respectively. The study mainly assesses the women’s livelihood security and empowerment through SHG.

Major Pandemics in the History of Mankind

Pandemics of gigantic proportions have afflicted humanity since antiquity. Various types of viruses, bacteria and other deadly pathogens have decimated populations across the globe over millennia. Bubonic plague is one such scourge that terrified millions of people once-upon-a-time. Many of the pandemics have died away over time, but some still persist. Cholera is one such pandemic that’s still smouldering. The current COVID-19 pandemic is still omnipresent and still creating havoc in many parts of the globe. Hence, it’s far from over and far from becoming “history”, which is why it hasn’t been dealt with here. Nevertheless, it has taught us to be ever vigilant and always be on our vanguard in case another catastrophic pandemic strikes. It’s not a question of “if”, it’s a question of “when”. It may come tomorrow, it may come next decade, or the next century. Only time will tell.

Energy Saving Potential of Daylight Integrated Lighting System in Built-In-Environment for Various Climatic Conditions

One of the recent trends in energy efficient lighting design is integrating daylight with artificial lighting which offers a sufficient amount of energy saving. Daylight illuminance is varying with respect to time of the day as well as the time of the year. Not only that daylight is very much depended on location, calendar date, time of the day, building construction geometry, window position, etc. Thus during the design of daylight integrated lighting system the measurement of daylight availability in a space is important. In this paper, a sample open office area has mainly been considered and lighting design has been done with highly energy efficient LED light sources and potential of energy saving has been studied at various climatic conditions with different building geometry considering integration of daylight with artificial lighting system.

Present Environmental Scenario of the River Systems of North Bengal – A Review

The Brahmaputra basin and the Ganga basin of North Bengal consist of many rivers and most of them originate from the hilly regions of Sikkim, Bhutan, Tibet, and Darjeeling. The Himalayan mountainous region in the state of West Bengal has an annual rainfall of 3000 to 6000 mm. These heavy rainfalls lead to landslides in hilly areas and severe floods in plains, mainly in North Bengal. Sewage discharged from municipalities in these basin areas enters the river water making it unusable even for outdoor bathing. For this reason, Paharpur to Siliguri is the polluted stretch of Teesta in 2018 and along Sevoke during 2022 in the category of Priority-V as demarcated by the Central Pollution Control Board.
