Abstract

Clarification of the new vitamin D endocrine system in the past decade has been a major milestone in medical research. Vitamin D is a pro-hormone which undergoes successive hydroxylations in the C-25 and C-1 positions of the molecule, in liver and kidney respectively, with the ultimate formation of 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1, 25 (OH) 2D) which is now generally believed to be the biologically active principle.
