Abstract

The incidence of diabetes mellitus, a chronic heterogenous group of disorder, has been on the rise of late with a country wide prevalence of 2 to 3 per cent among the urban and 1.5 per cent among the rural population. Non-Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus is the most common form and comprises 85 to 90 per cent of all diabetes. The major approaches for diabetes management are insulin therapy, oral hypoglycaemic drugs, exercise, diet and indigenous herbs.
