1H and 31P NMR Studies of the Reverse Micellar System, DPPC-CDCl3-H2O

Abstract

1H NMR and 31P NMR studies of DiPalmitoyl Phosphatidyl Choline (DPPC) in CDCl3, at various DPPC concentrations, indicate that DPPC exists as reverse micelles for concentrations beyond 6mM. At low concentrations (< 1.0 mM) aggregates of DPPC (dimers, trimers etc.) exist in CDCl3. The results suggest that at low concentrations of DPPC, intramolecular interactions predominate, whereas at high concentrations, intermolecular interactions predominate. Addition of water at higher concentrations of DPPC, reduces intermolecular interactions.
