IMPACT :

There is sufficient evidence to indicate quite reliably that the effect of impact at the rates of loading normally expected in engineering even if they may be fairly fast - say the hammerblow of a locomotive on a bridge or the water hammer in a penstock - is no worse than ordinary, slow static loading.
