Abstract

A total of 132 bacterial isolates Escherichia coli obtained from faecal samples of organized dairy, unorganized khatal and free rang animals between May 2007- February 2008 were studied to generate data regarding the prevalence of ESβL (Extended-spectrum β-lactamase) and antibiotic resistant bacterial strains in above three sources. ESβL production was significantly (p<0.01) more prevalent among organized dairy cattle which indicates selection of resistant E. coli in organized dairy due to abuse of antibiotics.
