Abstract

Rural India occupies 72% of the total geographical area of the country. It is resource-rich (land, water, forest, animal, bird and fish resources and above all wide range of biodiversities), but poor in capable human resources. Rural India is spread across 650,000 villages with an average population of 700 million in 2.3 lakhs village panchayats of which 170.3million live below the poverty line with poor quality of life in all respects.
