Abstract

West coast of India passes through five states, viz., Kerala, Karnataka, Maharastra, Goa and Gujarat and faces the Arbian sea. These states are very rich in marine fauna including marine crabs in coastal areas. On the other hand, a total of 34 species (Table 1) of freshwater crabs also inhabit in the freshwater wetlands of these states, a consolidated list and state- wise distribution of which are lacking till date. The present communication is an attempt to fill up these gaps. These freshwater crabs belong to three families, viz. , Gecarcinucidae, Parathelphusidae and Varunidae as defined by Ng (1988).
