Abstract

Brassicaceae family is made up of 350 genera; among them the most important one is Brassicawhich has a great global importance. It is the most abundant oilseed crop of India. Heavy metal toxicity has become a concerning fact for human and mankind. In this situation Brassica juncea is considered to be an effective phytoextractor as it is able to take out soil heavy metals. Brassica juncea seed and plants have proved its phytoremediation potential. Also, Brassica juncea seeds can produce secondary metabolites like isothiocyanates (ITC) and allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) which are found to be a good source of antimicrobials as they are able to kill different strains of deadly microbes. Apart from oil production, phytoremediation and antimicrobial property Brassica juncea is also considered as an antioxidant and they also play a crucial role in diabetes treatment and tumours (anti-cancer). This study is mainly focused on the multidimensional role of Brassica juncea.
