Abstract

Following the pioneering work of Beck-man in Europe, in India Sen et al observed that treatment of wheat and paddy straws enhanced their energy value. Similar results were obtained by Pandittesekere and Negi and Kehar. The treatment involved soaking the chaffed straw in eight limes its weight of 1 to 125 per cent caustic soda solution for 16 to 24 hours and washing the soaked straw thrice with water to remove the adhering alkali.
