Abstract

Inspite of the realisation of the preventable nature of vitamin A deficiency and the possibility of short term and long term measures in its prevention, vitamin A malnutrition still is of a grave dimension in most parts of the world. Prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in countries like India still accounts for a sizeable percentage of preventable blindness. Though the nation-wide prophylaxis programme is a step in the right direction, community based interventions coupled with proper nutrition education probably is the surest and permanent step in its alleviation.
