Abstract

Worldwide, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases are emerging as the most important cause of morbidity, mortality and disability. According to WHO-2, around the globe each year 16.7 and 3.2 million people die due to cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus, respectively. Diabetes is often accompanied by dyslipidemia which contributes significantly to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Oral hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic synthetic drugs are the mainstay of treatment of diabetes and dyslipidemia, respectively and although these drugs are effective they have prominent side-effects, lag behind poor patient compliance and are too expensive.
